This piece was done for my Sculpture II class. The assignment was to pick a verb and try to express that verb in a sculpture. I chose the verb mix because it describes both the process of making the sculpture and the idea of a mix in the canine breed sense. As with the Social Anxiety sculpture, this piece was created out of Hydro-Cal from a plaster cast. The cast for this piece, however, was created by plastering smaller patches of casted parts together. Most of the parts were casted from myself; the knees, for instance, were casted from my elbows. The canine areas, however, were casted from a dog named Max. The dog parts include the Nose, Eyes, Ears, and four of the fingers on each hand.
I experimented with the mixing of the Hydro-Cal for this piece by adding in different liquids such as black Ink. While detailing the head and upper body, the feet and ankles began breaking off due to the weak experimental mixture. To try and cover up the breaks at the last minute, I used Gessoed pieces of canvas. To excuse the pieces of canvas I unsuccessfully tried to disguise them as fleshy pieces of afterbirth, implying that the Mix is a newborn. The hair that I used for this sculpture, I got from brushing out my dog Pork Chop. Although I learned a great deal from creating this sculpture, I consider the end result to be, for the most part, a failure.
