This piece was done for my Sculpture IB class. The frame of the piece was constructed out of steel rod. The frame was then covered by steel plates cut and bent to fit the frame. The plates were then welded together and grinded clean. The assignment was called Machine Dream/Machine Nightmare. We could choose to create a metal sculpture either expressing a positive aspect of machines or a negative one. I chose to create a metal car in a futurist style. The futurist movement occurred during the early 20th century. It began as a literary movement but later encompassed the fine arts as well. The movement mostly focused on a love of speed and war. Much of the art was inspired by cubism. The artists used force lines in their paintings to break up the picture plane and to emphasize movement. Some of their sculptures showed objects melting back to show a sense of intense speed. In my sculpture I tried to use force lines to try and imply speed to the object and to give a melting back feeling. I had intended to include tire shapes melting back but didn't allow myself enough time to add them. I photographed the peice on a red-painted chip board, for some reason...
