Azia Dragon: The Dolphin Hunter - Regular Version
This is a digital painting. I started by sketching the dragon on paper. I then scanned it into the computer so that I could create a digital composite to later base an oil painting on. The compositing kept up my interest, so I ended up fleshing it all out digitally. The moon in this version was taken from an actual photograph, which I found online. I altered the moon image quite a bit in order to composite it into the painting.
A few things that might be missed... I tried to make the rock look wet directly beneath the dragon's feet and tail. It doesn't look as obvious as I would like. The idea being that the creature has recently dipped in to grab some prey. Also, the creature's underbelly and the underside of the wings are supposed to be light blue-ish colored. The idea being that the dragon would be less noticeable from below just before it swoops down for a catch.
One of the oddest aspects of this project was the lighting. I typically choose to light my creature drawings from the front of the subject. It was a bit of a pain, but I think it makes the image a bit more dynamic. Yeah?
The original inspiration for starting this project was to kind of renovate my earlier dragon design from back in '99. Pretty much the only resemblance, now, is the wings. Go compare! It makes this one look better!
The dragon was named after my friend's daughter Azia. The second part of the name comes from the story I'm writing, in which the dragons feed on dolphins.
